It's finally official, but most people guessed it was only a matter of time. THQ revealed the first information regarding a new MMO set in the Warhammer 40k setting. Currently no set release date as of yet.

The team behind it is Vigil Studios, a division of THQ. THQ brought us Dawn of War 1 and 2 (though from Relic Studios) so they hopefully will bring the same accuracy those games showed the source material. Based on the video the game plays more like a third person shooter rather than a typical MMO setup (hard to confirm based on the limited info provided however).

Set in the gritty and bleak universe of the 40th millenium, mankind has conquered much of the galaxy. However all is not peaceful, and there is constant war raging across thousands of planets within the Imperium of Man. The Emperor sits atop the Golden Throne, protecting all of mankind and lighting the way through the Chaos tainted warp. A thousand psykers (psychic humans) are sacrificed every day to preserve the Emperor's body in his holy stasis.

Orks ravage entire worlds just for the sake of slaughter, fighting using fearful weapons and vehicles that have no business functioning. Eldar use their superior technology and cunning to weaken and destroy humanity. The swarms of the Tyranids devour all life to spawn ever greater armies. Terrifying Chaos forces corrupt and subvert the citizens of the Imperium, which must be excised before the cancer can spread.

Oooohhh, pretty cool. I heard rumors about this, glad to see it's official. I also have like THQ as a company, they've made some good games over the years... we'll see how they do with an MMO, though.

I'm not exactly sure on how I feel about the gameplay, but it has a good backdrop, either way.

I'm a long time fan of 40k . This looks promising!

I've always greatly preferred 40k myself. I've even played both the miniature and pen and paper RPG, not to mention having read a ton of the books.

One thing I'm worried about though is that the official game site has almost no info, but it does mention the forces of "Order" and "Destruction" battling each other. Now, in 40k it's not particularly likely that ANY faction would team up. The Imperium is completely xenophobic and pretty much kills most aliens on sight. They certainly wouldn't join forces with an alien to gain control of a planet.

It really needs a more open type of "faction" system to do any justice, but they'll probably find some way to shoehorn two factions to use. I suspect Order would be Imperium, Tau and possibly eldar (they could really go either way if looking at the big picture). Orks and Chaos would obviously be Destruction, with Tyranids being NPCs only.
